What is Truth?

Armando Palazzo

What is Absolute Truth? What is the difference between Objective and Subjective Truth? In our journey to understand the concept of truth, it is important to remember that this quest has been the journey of humanity from the dawn of creation. The notion that there is an Objective Truth requires investigation because everything depends on it. There is nothing worse than a lie, except for living in one. That is the challenge, discerning a lie from truth, fiction from reality, and moving from subjective to objective. What is true for you does not matter in the grand scheme of things if it does not matter and applies to everyone else. Subjective Truth does not matter if it is seen as nonbinding to everyone else. You cannot win a game—or at life—when everyone is playing by different rules.

In our complex and ever-evolving world, the concept of truth seems to perplex and fascinate us, simultaneously. What is truth? It is a question that has puzzled philosophers, scholars, and thinkers for centuries, and yet, this question continues to captivate our minds today.

The Bible offers profound insights into the nature of truth and its significance in our lives. Join me as we explore what the Bible reveals about truth and its timeless wisdom!

Truth in the Bible

The Bible highlights the centrality of truth as a foundational principle; it applies to every facet of life, from faith to relationships, morality, society, culture, and far beyond. It emphasizes the importance of truthfulness in our words, actions, and relationships. In John 14:6, Jesus declares, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” This verse reminds us that truth is not merely an abstract concept rather it is embodied in the person of Jesus Christ. God is truth and demands that standard for all creation and all times.

Defining Truth

At its core, truth represents the state of being in accordance with reality. It is the alignment between what we perceive, believe, or express, and the actual facts or existence of something. Truth acts as a guiding principle, serving as a beacon of clarity amidst the chaos of information and opinions that surround us.

Absolute and Eternal Truth

According to the Bible, Truth is absolute and eternal, untouched by the shifting sands of human opinions, times, culture, or societal norms. Psalm 119:160 proclaims, “All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal.” This verse affirms that God’s Word, as revealed in the Scriptures, is the ultimate source of truth, providing unwavering guidance in an ever-changing world.

Truth and Freedom

The Bible also teaches that truth and freedom are intricately intertwined. In John 8:32, Jesus asserts, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” This verse reminds us that embracing truth liberates us from the shackles of falsehood, ignorance, and deception, enabling us to live authentically and experience genuine freedom.

The Search for Truth

The Bible encourages us to diligently seek truth, both in our understanding of God and in our daily lives. Proverbs 23:23 urges, “Buy the truth and do not sell it—wisdom, instruction and insight as well.” This verse exhorts us to value and prioritize truth, recognizing its transformative power in shaping our character and worldview.

Subjectivity vs Objectivity

Truth can be subjective, influenced by our individual experiences, emotions, and beliefs. It is important to recognize that personal truths exist, shaped by our unique experiences that shape our perspectives. However, we must also acknowledge the existence of objective truths, which remain true regardless of our personal interpretations and experiences. Objective Truth is the truth that defies time, culture, society, and opinions.

Objective Truth is the truth that is binding and fixed. It applies to all peoples, societies, and cultures always. Examples of Objective truth are: murder is morally wrong, slavery is morally wrong, lying is wrong, etc. Subjective truth is fine, there is room for it until it collides with Objective Truth. At this moment, subjective truth must be abandoned and bow its knee to the timelessness of Objective Truth!

Living in Truth

Ultimately, the Bible calls us to embody truth in all aspects of our lives. Ephesians 4:15 encourages us to “speak the truth in love,” emphasizing the importance of combining truth with compassion and kindness. By walking in truth, we cultivate authenticity, integrity, and a deep reverence for God’s divine plan.

Conclusion

The Bible illuminates the essence of Truth, revealing it as an absolute, eternal, and transformative force. It reminds us of the inseparable connection between truth and freedom, urging us to seek and cherish truth, in our pursuit of a purposeful and meaningful life. As we navigate the complexities of our world, may we find solace and guidance in the eternal truths revealed within the pages of the Bible!
